Tonny Omwansa is a lecturer at the Faculty of Information technology, Strathmore University in Nairobi, Kenya. In his lecturing career, Mr. Omwansa specializes in application courses such as E-Commerce, Multimedia applications and programming.

In research and consultancy, Mr. Omwansa specializes in conducting research in the pan-African region with a focus on ICT for development and transformation. His research interests include the following:

  • Socio-Economic Impacts of technology in developing countries
  • Mobile technologies (Mobile Money, Mobile Learning, Mobile phone adoption etc) and the transformative impact in the region.
  • Technology transfer and domestication

Omwansa has been involved in conducting various studies and published a number of reports including the status and opportunities of the business processing outsourcing status in Kenya, the Mobile Banking landscape in Kenya, the up-take of mobile money in Kenya and the Socio-Economic impact of 3G/HSPA technology in Tanzania.

In conducting research, Omwansa has been commissioned and worked in collaboration with Economic Commission of Africa (ECA), IDRC, GSMA, Qualcomm, Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

Omwansa has presented and participated in a number of conferences including:

  • Annual ICT conference at Strathmore University , Nairobi Kenya (Organizer and presenter)
  • South Africa – Mobile Active (Presenter )
  • South Africa – Research ICT Africa, pan Africa data analysis and publication (analyst and presenter)
  • Tanzania – Africa resource bank meetings (presenter)
  • Zambia - Poverty Eradication through Human Capital Development & Capacity Building (presenter)
  • Kampala –Advancing mobile applications development in East Africa,  (Organizer and presenter)
  • Mobile Money summits, Barcelona, Spain – Delegate
